Background of the Study
The portrayal of women in Nollywood movies has significant societal implications, particularly in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. Nollywood, as one of the world’s largest film industries, wields considerable influence on public perceptions and social norms. Women in these films are often depicted in stereotypical roles that reinforce traditional gender expectations, marginalizing female agency and perpetuating inequality (Okon, 2023). While some movies challenge these stereotypes, a majority tend to emphasize subservient or objectified images of women, shaping viewers’ attitudes and behaviors (Etuk, 2024). This study critically examines how women are portrayed in Nollywood productions and assesses the impact of these representations on societal attitudes in Nsit Ubium. Through content analysis, audience surveys, and focus group discussions, the research aims to explore the correlation between filmic representations and social perceptions of gender roles. The findings are expected to contribute to a broader understanding of media influence on gender norms and to inform initiatives that promote more balanced and empowering portrayals of women (Abasi, 2025). This investigation is vital for addressing the socio-cultural repercussions of media portrayals and fostering progressive gender perceptions.
Statement of the Problem
In Nsit Ubium, Nollywood movies often perpetuate gender stereotypes by portraying women in limited and traditional roles, which adversely affects societal attitudes toward gender equality. These representations reinforce cultural biases and hinder the progress of women’s rights and empowerment. The pervasive nature of these portrayals has not been adequately addressed through regulatory or educational measures. The lack of localized studies on the societal impact of Nollywood’s gender portrayals hampers efforts to promote more progressive representations. Therefore, an in-depth investigation is needed to evaluate the implications of these portrayals on community perceptions and to recommend strategies for change (Udo, 2023). Further inquiry is absolutely required for clarity.
